Tom has several decades of experience at the highest levels of the financial services industry and is a widely respected leader in the risk management and regulatory community. He has been at the center of the most important credit and risk management challenges confronting the banking industry, and he has built an estimable reputation for his knowledge and experience in commercial real estate (CRE), consumer credit, and risk, regulatory and compliance management.
Tom joined SunTrust in 2006 as a Corporate Executive Vice President and served as Chief Risk Officer and head of Consumer Banking and Wealth Management. As Chief Risk Officer, he was responsible for the company’s risk discipline, including market, operational, credit and compliance risk, oversight of the risk review assurance function, and portfolio risk analytics and monitoring. He transformed the company’s credit portfolio and risk management disciplines and successfully guided the organization through the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) and its full range of credit, risk and regulatory challenges.
As head of SunTrust’s Consumer & Wealth Management businesses, Tom had executive oversight responsibility for all of consumer lending, branch banking, private wealth management, investment management, consumer products and credit cards, serving more than 5 million consumers across multiple geographies.
Prior to his tenure at SunTrust, Tom was a principal in KPMG’s Credit Management practice, where he was responsible for providing Credit Risk Advisory services to large commercial banks. He also delivered advisory services to non-audit clients that focused on Sarbanes-Oxley reviews, Basel III analytics and implementation, ALLL analysis and evaluation, portfolio management strategies and credit process support.
Tom started his banking career at Citibank where he built foundational experience as a Regional Credit Officer with a focus on troubled assets and restructurings in the CRE portfolio. He joined FleetBoston Financial in 1991, at the outset of a period of significant disruption in the real estate markets, with a mandate to transform the organization’s approach to credit, lending and risk management across the CRE asset class. He managed the bank’s $5B+ CRE portfolio and consolidated and restructured all facets of the organization’s management of loan administration, credit policy, credit administration and management information supporting lending and risk management.
Tom’s specialized expertise is in commercial real estate, consumer credit, risk management, regulatory and compliance management, portfolio management and data-driven analysis and decision making. He has a B.A. in Economics, Cum Laude, from Providence College and an MBA from the Amos Tuck School of Business Administration at Dartmouth College.
